Decision framework
Use this calculator when choosing between a normal card, ATM withdrawal, cash exchange or multi-currency card.
FX costs include more than the fee printed by your bank. Merchant conversion prompts, ATM operator conversion, spread and cashback assumptions can change the result.
Card vs alternative card
If a 1,000 USD purchase has a 3% issuer FX fee, a 0.5% spread and a 5 USD ATM or fixed cost, the current setup can cost materially more than a card with a lower FX fee and no forced conversion.
Before you pay abroad
- Choose local currency at card terminals when offered a choice.
- Check ATM operator fees before confirming cash withdrawals.
- Compare settled amounts, not just advertised percentages.
- Keep screenshots only when they help resolve a dispute.
