Answer

Of the cards with a full price, N26 Smart is cheapest: about 10.00 EUR; Bybit Card EU costs 10.50 EUR. Wirex Standard costs 7.00 EUR and Wise 8.35 EUR, each plus a conversion fee that depends on the currency (the app shows it before you pay). Nexo Card Base has only a virtual card on this plan, so it cannot withdraw cash and is left out of the comparison.

Assumes a euro card used in another currency outside Europe, so payments and cash are converted.

Decision framework

Pick where you live and how you will spend on the trip, and the calculator ranks the travel cards we track by what the trip costs in card fees, cheapest first.

Each card uses its published fees for your residence, with the date they were checked and a link to the source. The calculator adds the exchange fee on card payments and cash, the provider ATM fee above each free monthly allowance, the plan’s monthly fee and the first physical card or its delivery. Weekend exchange fees apply to the weekend share you enter. Wise and Wirex price conversion per currency pair, so their totals show the other fees and the app shows the conversion fee before you pay. ATM owners can add their own fee on the machine screen.

Example: EUR 1,000 by card and EUR 300 in cash for a month

An EEA resident spends EUR 1,000 by card and takes EUR 300 in two withdrawals in one month outside Europe. N26 Smart costs EUR 10.00 (1.7% of the cash plus EUR 4.90 for the plan); Bybit Card EU costs EUR 10.50 (0.5% of EUR 1,300 plus 2% of the EUR 200 above its EUR 100 allowance); N26 Standard costs EUR 15.10 with the EUR 10 physical card (fees as of 26 Sep 2026).

Before you choose a card for the trip

  • Use the region where your account is registered: prices differ by residence.
  • Split cash into fewer, larger withdrawals if the card has a free allowance.
  • Pay in the local currency when a terminal or ATM offers to convert.
  • Order the physical card well before you leave if you need ATM cash.
  • Carry a second card from another provider as a backup.

FAQ

Which card is cheapest for a trip abroad?

It depends on where you live, how much cash you take and whether you spend in your card’s own currency. For an EEA resident spending EUR 1,000 by card and EUR 300 in cash outside Europe, the lowest full prices are N26 Smart at EUR 10.00 and Bybit Card EU at EUR 10.50 (as of 26 Sep 2026). Wirex costs EUR 7.00 (as of 26 Sep 2026) and Wise EUR 8.35 (as of 10 Oct 2026) before their conversion fee, which depends on the currency, so check it in the app. In the UK, Revolut Standard costs GBP 8.90 for the same trip in pounds (as of 26 Sep 2026).

Why do Wise and Wirex show “+ conversion fee”?

Both price currency conversion per currency pair rather than at one fixed percentage. The total shows their ATM and card fees, and the app shows the conversion fee before you pay, so add it for the currency you will spend.

Does the total include the ATM owner’s fee?

No. The total covers the card provider’s fees. An ATM owner can add its own charge, which the machine shows before you confirm; choose a bank ATM and decline the machine’s own conversion to keep it low.

How are weekend fees counted?

Revolut Standard adds 1% to exchanges at weekends, and Nexo charges 0.7% instead of 0.2% inside Europe (2.5% instead of 2% outside). The calculator applies those extra fees to the weekend share of spending you enter.

Fees and terms change, so check the provider’s current price page before you sign up. How we compare
